Clearwater Beach is arguably the most renowned beach in Florida. It seems people travel here year round looking for clear waters, tons of things to do, sugar white sand for three miles and Tampa International Airport 45 minutes away makes travel easy.

Clearwater Beach is situated on a barrier island off the mainland city of Clearwater. We have some of the most recognized hotel brands in the country lining our shores. They include Hyatt, Hilton, Wyndham and Marriott has six of their brands on the island. The Opal group has two hotels and building a third.

While we love Clearwater Beach, we recognize Florida has hundreds of beaches and many of them equal or surpass the water clarity here on the west coast of the Sunshine State. Peruse the list below and find your destination in paradise.

Where Are the Beaches with Clear Waters in Florida?

We can’t talk about the clearest water in Florida without talking about the hundreds of springs in Florida (more than any other state). Not only are the springs the purest, clearest waters you will find but they run off to rivers, streams, and bays that keep many coastal waters clean and pure.

The clearest waters in Florida will be discussed by regions and the beaches in the regions. The regions will be:

  • The Florida Panhandle
  • West Coast of Florida
  • The Florida Keys
  • Florida’s East Coast

Each region has stunning crystal clear beach water and landscapes that are a must-visit for visitors, nature lovers, and traveling residents like us. 

The Clear Waters in Florida and the Panhandle

The panhandle of Florida stretches from Pensacola Florida on the west to Apalachicola on the east. There are dozens of stunning beaches with emerald green clear waters and white sandy beaches. Here are the best Florida beaches with clear water from west to east in the panhandle:

The last of our panhandle beaches with clear water is, in our opinion, the best clear waters on a Florida beach. With over 22 miles of white sandy beaches, framed by dunes and sea oats, St. George Island offers a serene retreat for beachgoers seeking relaxation and outdoor adventures. As you can see the Florida Panhandle is one of the largest regions in Florida with waters as pure as they get in Florida. Our journey took us about 235 miles of scenic shoreline that Florida is known for.

The Clear Water Beaches of Florida’s West Coast

The west coast of Florida from the Big Bend Area to Marco Island covers some 350 miles. Much of the shoreline, with just a few exceptions, in the north are patches of mangrove-covered flatlands with few beaches until you reach areas south of Crystal River, Florida.

Honeymoon Island State Park

We include St. Pete Beach with clear waters in Florida only because it is slightly better with water clarity than Clearwater Beach. Overall, with all factors included, our preference for living, vacationing and touring is Clearwater Beach. St. Pete Beach is still a fun beach with a long shoreline and plenty of things to do. Anna Maria Island

Marco Island itself has some of the clearest waters you will find in Florida. This upscale island has some beautiful beaches. We also include the absolute best clear water beach in southwest Florida called Keewaydin Island. This island is only accessible by boat tours from Marco Island. Keewaydin offers visitors a secluded and unspoiled coastal experience amidst natural beauty. The island is known for its untouched white sand beaches, shallow waters, and abundant wildlife. These are the recommended clear waters in Florida along the west coast of Florida beaches. The Sunshine State has hundreds of beaches and we don’t claim to have visited them all, but we know the ones listed here offer a beach experience in some of the clearest waters in the state.

The Clear Water Beaches of the Florida Keys

We start our journey through the Keys from Key West and end up in Key Largo. It should be noted that it is hard to find any patch of beach in the Florida Keys that doesn’t have clear waters common to Caribbean-style beaches. Our list includes our favorites that are accessible and people-friendly.

Best Beach with Clear Waters in Florida – Fort Jefferson, Dry Tortugas

Our pick for the best beach in Florida for clear water. We include this in the beaches of the Keys because it can only be reached by boat or seaplane most commonly from Key West about 70 miles away. You can take a plane or boat ride here. We can only recite our trips to Fort Jefferson by saying there are no clearer waters, no better attractions and no more snorkeling fun than at the Dry Tortugas and Fort Jefferson. It takes a few bucks and some time to get there but it is worth every minute of the trip. Take the tour of the Fort, picnic on the beach and snorkel the area – it doesn’t get any better than this!

We had to ask ourselves if we wanted to include this beach in Islamorada. Is our goal to find a place for a beach towel or is it to find the clear waters in Florida? We chose the latter. Annes Beach is small and a great reprieve for a long drive through the Keys. It is a place to explore and marvel of what Mother Nature has to offer. The Clear Waters in Florida on the East Coast

Why Aren’t the Beaches on the East Coast Clear Like the West Coast of Florida?

On the east coast of Florida, the proximity to the Gulf Stream, a warm ocean current, can often result in murkier water. The Gulf Stream brings nutrient-rich water from the Caribbean Sea, which can contribute to higher levels of plankton and algae, reducing water clarity. Additionally, the east coast tends to have more wave action and sediment transport due to prevailing winds and storms, which can stir up sediment and make the water appear less clear.
