Florida Covid-19 Update 5-01-2020


  • On Wednesday evening Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announced Phase One of a plan to reopen the economy in Florida.
  • The plan excludes the counties of Dade, Broward and Palm Beach. While those counties have about one-third of the states population – they also represent 60% of the states 35,000 cases of covid-19 AND well over 50% of the  almost 1400 deaths in the state.
  • Phase one opening allows restaurants and most retailers to open at 25% of their MAXIMUM capacity beginning Monday, May 4th. Restaurants with outdoor seating may fill the area as long as social distancing is maintained.
  • Beaches open with no restrictions except social distancing. Pools are opened with 50% capacity maximum.
  • In all circumstances, groups of 10 or more people are prohibited!
  • Other restrictions keep hair salons, gyms and similar close contact businesses closed.

No, the beaches are not open until 7 AM Monday morning, but about two-thirds of the restaurants and a few other businesses were busy. Employees were cleaning, repairing and stocking their businesses. Traffic was even backed up along the streets – but I don’t think anyone is going to complain right now. Here is a LIVE view of Clearwater Beach.   The Chart Shows Clear Downward Trend Pinellas County shows cautious optimism in the chart below. While there are about a dozen new cases a day in the county (almost 1 million people in the county), the increasing testing capability may show spikes of infections along the way.
