Directions To Key West from Orlando

The quickest and most efficient route to Key West is the expressway. Traveling limited access highways avoids normal traffic but can get congested during peak work periods in the morning and evening.

The fastest route to Key West from Orlando is from the city’s center, take I-4 south to the Florida Turnpike. You will stay on the Turnpike all the way to Route 1 in Homestead, Florida. Route 1 south will turn into the Overseas Highway through the Florida Keys.

An optional route that gives you more access to coastal communities on the road to Key West is to take Route 528 east from Orlando to I-95. You can follow I-95 south to Route 1 in Homestead.

Best Stops Along the Way

As you embark on your journey from Orlando to Key West, there are numerous stops that can enrich your experience and provide a deeper appreciation for the Sunshine State.

There are many potential places to explore along the way here is a list to consider:

• The sundrenched beaches of Miami Beach may be a perfect place to relax after about 2/3/4 hours.
• By the time you reach Key Largo, you have about 120 miles left to explore. Consider stopping at John Pennekamp State Park in Key Largo at mile marker 102.8.
• One of the most popular first-time Key visitor attractions is Robbie’s at mile marker 77. It’s a great place to stretch your legs and watch people feed huge tarpon on the dock.
• At mile marker 73.4 is Anne’s Beach. This is a place to wade in the ocean and take a break from driving.
• Mile marker 58.9 is the Dolphin Research Center. Here you can see how these people train and rescue dolphins in the Florida Keys.
• If you are looking for a final stop before reaching Key West. Consider Bahia Honda State Park. Here you can rest on the beach or walk the trails. Find this park at mile marker 36.8.

• Make sure to stop at the numerous viewpoints along the way, such as the Seven Mile Bridge, where you can marvel at the expansive ocean views that stretch as far as the eye can see. • If you are looking for a breathtaking sunset, there is a place in Marathon called the Sunset Grille. It is located at the base of the Seven Mile Bridge.

• In Islamorada, our old favorite, the Holiday Isle is now the Three Waters Resort. It is on the Atlantic Ocean with a great waterside tiki bar.
• In Marathon we like the laid-back Tranquility Bay on the bayside. However, we toured the Isla Bella Resort on our last trip and vowed to try that on our next trip. It is oceanside with great views.
