The Basics

Swimwear – Even if you are not heading to the beach, your hotel may have an inviting pool or you may just want to get a little sun. If you want something new try finding swimwear for the family here.

Sunscreen & Lip Balm – Buy BEFORE you leave. You will pay double at many resort locations. You can get good prices on sunscreen here. Don’t forget, if you are flying, you may only take containers of any liquid that are 3 ounces or less on an airplane. You need travel size sunscreen. Don’t forget lip balm sunscreen! Countless vacations are ruined by chapped and broken lips from the sun and dry air.

Flip-Flops – Look like the locals – wear flip-flops or at least comfortable shoes for walking. You will more than likely be doing a lot of that!

Cover-Ups or Old Sweatshirt – If you are going to take swimwear, you will need cover-ups or an old shirt to get into restaurant, stores and public places.

Sunglasses, preferably polarized – regular sunglasses are ok, but polarized sunglasses lets you see into the water and they have UV protection for your eyes.

Hat for Sun Protection – If you are going anywhere the sun is shinning bright, take a hat that will protect you from the sun. You will see better and not end up sunburnt on delicate face areas.

Beach Stuff – If you are fortunate enough to be going to a beach destination, take beach towels, beach blankets and a refillable water bottle (saves money).

Beach Bag – A beach bag is optional, but if you are packing for a family, it is a necessity!

Packing List for a Family

Packing for a family trip brings a whole new element into your list of travel items you need to pack. Age of your children, planned activities and destination may alter your checklist.

Children’s Sunscreen – Using adult strength sunscreen on young children is not recommended by pediatricians. Manufacturers and drug companies have special formulas for children’s sunscreen. Lip balm is equally important. They even make flavored lip balm for kids.

Comfortable Shoes – We sometimes forget that young children are developing at a fast pace and need shoes to grow with them. Comfortable children’s shoes may reduce those whines when walking.

Bug Repellent – This may apply to the whole family but bug repellent is a necessity if you are going to southern forests, state parks or places where things want to use you and your children for a meal. Get the proper bug repellent.

Travel Size First Aid Kit – There is not a parent out there who hasn’t seen the need for a Band-Aid at the most inopportune time. Packing a small first aid kit will stop interruptions of your vacation. Travel sized first aid kits are hard to find in stores.

Cheap ($2) Poncho’s – Rain is inevitable almost anywhere you go. Even Florida is known for it’s afternoon showers. Don’t ruin your day by not having an inexpensive poncho. They will not take up much room in your bag.

Refillable Family Water Bottles – Want to save a quick $100? Think how many water bottles your family of four will drink in a week’s time. Refillable water bottles for the family is the answer.

Games for the Family – While we hope you never have a rainy day on vacation, chances are there will be a down day. Putting a couple of children’s games in your bag can solve temporary boredom.

Common Sense List of Travel Items

While this brief list seems unnecessary, it is amazing how often we get somewhere and can’t believe we left out some basic item on the travel list of items to take. These are reminders.

Clothing for the Destination – You may not need that cocktail dress on the island of Grenada or other similar islands. No one dresses formal. Yet a trip to Manhattan may require dress attire for restaurants. Florida is also tropical, but those dress clothes are only necessary for a planned event.

Shoes for the Destination or Occasion – Plan for comfortable shoes during the day and versatile shoes for that special occasion. Flip flops for Florida may be all you need!

Toiletries – The destination may dictate the number and type of toiletries you choose to pack. Remember, if you are flying, there are special considerations we cover below. In either case, you may need a toiletry case or bag for travel.

Hair Products – Men and women seem to forget things like their favorite shampoo, hair spray and conditioner as well as curlers and dryers.

Plane Tickets & Boarding Passes – This may seem obvious, but how many times are these documents forgotten at home. Yes, you can stand in line at the airport and hope to duplicate them, but that may cause you to miss your flight as a good friend of ours did on a recent trip to Aruba!

Carry-on Bag – You will need a carry-on bag for several reasons.

• To carry essentials like electronics, medicines and things that are critical for your journey.
• You may need multiple documents for legs of your travel.
• Snacks for you or children during the flight.

Phone/Laptop/Ipad Battery Backup – On long flights you may use your devices for movies, writing, reading or other reasons. To make certain you don’t run out of power, our favorite power restorer and backup is here.

Toiletries for a Long Flight – At the very least you will want a toothbrush and toothpaste for a long air flight.

We have to take into consideration that not everyone is going to a beach or fancy resort. Places like Alaska, The Everglades and many national and state parks may need some additional consideration. We may not have everything listed, but you need to pack for your vacation location.

Outdoor Clothing – Things like long sleeve shirts for warding off mosquitoes in the everglades or the chill of Alaska may be a good idea.

Jackets or Coats – Even as warm as it gets in Florida, nights can be in the 50s. Of course cold destinations may require light weight insulated coats. Think through your predicted weather.

Remember, if you are on some type of an adventure like The Everglades, fishing, hiking, snow skiing or similar vacation trips, do some research for necessary clothing.
