Mile Markers in the Florida Keys (MM) are crucial for navigating the region. These markers indicate the distance in miles north of Key West, starting at MM 0. The main business hub of unincorporated Key Largo is located around MM 100, approximately 100 miles northeast of Key West.

The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) maintains small rectangular green signs with white numbers every mile on both sides of the Overseas Highway.

Addresses along the highway are often expressed as four, five, or six-digit numbers representing the MM. For example, a business address of 100511 Overseas Highway is located around MM 100.5. If the last digit of the address is even, the location is on the west (or northwest) (Gulfside); if odd, it is on the east (or southeast) (Atlantic Ocean) side.

Subtracting two MM numbers provides the approximate mileage between two points. Mile Markers decrease in number as you travel south or southwest, with MM 0 situated in Key West. While the markers run north to south, the highway itself curves and may run east to west in certain sections, especially in the Lower Keys.

It’s important to note that business locations and Mile Marker references can change over time. 

The practice of marking miles in the Keys originated with Henry Flagler, who numbered each mile along his Florida East Coast Railway, starting from Mile Post 0 in Jacksonville to Mile Post 522 in Key West.

These markers were white triangular concrete posts with the Mile Post numbers embossed and painted in black. To convert MM to the original Mile Post system, subtract the MM from 522. One such post exists in Anglers Park, Key Largo.

Keep in mind that some Mile Marker references may be changed or altered from time to time or no longer exist.
