Marco Island isn’t the only town in Florida that could be considered in our list of safest Florida Towns and cities. Other choices include:
- The Villages – A Census Designated Area of nearly 100,000 residents, The Villages is very close to being number one safe town in Florida because –
-
- The crime rate in The Villages is typically lower than the national and state averages, especially for violent crimes. Property crimes do occur but are still less frequent compared to non-retirement communities.

- Little poverty and unemployment -The Villages is relatively affluent, with high levels of homeownership and income stability due to retirement savings and pensions. This reduces the economic pressures that often contribute to higher crime rates.
-
- Active lifestyle: The Villages offers a range of social clubs, activities, and amenities for residents. This active social environment fosters a sense of well-being and community, which can help reduce stress and prevent crime.
2. Oviedo – This town northeast of Orlando of over 40,000 people can also be a strong candidate for the safest place in Florida. Key reasons include:
-
- Oviedo consistently reports low crime rates, both in terms of violent crimes and property crimes. It ranks safer than the majority of cities in Florida, with fewer incidents of assault, theft, or burglary.
-
- The Oviedo Police Department is well-regarded for its community-focused approach. - Oviedo is a suburban city located about 20 miles northeast of Orlando. Its distance from major urban centers reduces the influence of crime typically associated with larger cities. It is somewhat isolated from higher-crime areas, which reduces spillover crime that can occur in more densely populated regions. Why and How Our Choices Were Made
Methodology
You would think obtaining data to factually present the safest cities in Florida would be relatively simple. That was not the case. There must be some subjective decisions made when presenting the data.
For example, should violent crime (murder, rape, robbery) be treated the same as non-violent crime (theft, vandalism, property crimes). In our results, we chose to place more emphasis on personal safety. Violent crimes were given double the weight of non-violent crimes.
The other subjective decision we made was to separate small towns in Florida from large towns. There are literally hundreds of small towns in Florida with little or no crime. In our data we excluded small towns under 15,000 residents.
Sources used for data compilation are at the end of this article.
Biases in the Data
Many of the sources used for compilation of facts and figures showed they had biases in presenting the data. For instance, real estate websites tend to look favorably on the locations they are promoting.
Other biases that we have included are important to our readers. In many of our blog posts we recommend a location, attraction or destination with the caveat of it being as safe as we can determine.
That means we do not include a safe location that is in the midst of dangerous areas that are essential to accessing the safe area. We feel a commitment to our readers to eliminate any potential risks we know of.
Many Safe Places in Florida
It should be clearly stated that Florida is one of the safest states in the country with 23 million residents and an additional two or three million visitors at any given time of the year.
We stated above there are hundreds of small towns in Florida with lower or similar crime rates as we have presented above. In future posts we will include even more data about the cities and towns in Florida that are safe for residents, tourists and travelers.
We congratulate Marco Island and the four runner ups for being the safest cities in Florida.
