Even more confusion arises when talking about travel size when it references luggage and other personal items you may want to travel with on an airplane. These regulations must be observed to board your flight. We cover those regulations below.

As we stated, travel size are smaller versions of common products normally used in everyday life. There are restrictions from both TSA and the FAA.

Carry-On Luggage
TSA Liquids Rule (3-1-1 Rule): Liquids must comply with the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule:

Checked Luggage
No Size Limit: You can pack liquids in your checked luggage without worrying about the 3.4-ounce limit. However, to avoid leaks, it’s a good idea to pack it securely, perhaps wrapping the bottle in clothing or placing it in a protective case.

Traveling with carry-on items and toiletries can be expensive if you buy everything in travel-sized versions. Here are some money-saving tips to help you prepare without breaking the bank:
Remember, you can carry full size toiletries in your checked bags up to a total of 70 ounces in containers no larger than 18 ounces each. You can refill carry-on travel size bottles from larger containers for any toiletries you feel necessary for the length of your trip. Buy solid replacements for liquids. They have no limitations (like bar soap, solid stick deodorant, shampoo, etc.).
If you travel frequently, buy travel size toiletries in bulk at much lower prices.
Collect hotel soaps, makeup remover, shampoo and other similar items when saying in resorts and other accommodations.
BUY IN ADVANCE – airport prices are very high and so are travel destinations.
Buy refillable water bottles. While you cannot carry FULL water bottles through TSA, you can refill them before boarding the airplane. One recent trip we paid $7.84 for two bottles of water at an airport!
Remember, while you can have travel size toiletries in you carry-on bag, they are limited to what can fit in a quart size bag. (that is about 9 items)

FAQs About Alcohol and Airline Travel
How much alcohol can I take on a plane?
In a carry-on you could take up to 9, fully sealed with retail packaging, 3.4 ounce bottles. In checked baggage, you could take up to 1.3 gallons. (see more below)
How much liquor can I carry in international flight?
According to the FAA:
You may carry in checked bags alcohol that is “more than 24% and not more than 70% alcohol by volume when in unopened retail packagings not exceeding 5 liters (1.3 gallons) carried in carry-on or checked baggage, with a total net quantity per person of 5 liters (1.3) gallons for such beverages.”
Can you take alcohol on a plane carry-on?
Yes, for carry-on you are limited to containers of 3.4oz or less that can fit comfortably in one quart-sized, clear, zip-top bag. Please remember, one bag per passenger to get through TSA checkpoints.
Can you take opened bottles of alcohol on a plane?
There is much confusion about the answer to this, but here is the answer directly from the TSA website:
Checked Baggage – “Alcoholic beverages with more than 24% but not more than 70% alcohol are limited in checked bags to 5 liters (1.3 gallons) per passenger and must be in unopened retail packaging. Alcoholic beverages with 24% alcohol or less are not subject to limitations in checked bags.”
Carry-on Bags – From TSA website: “Check with your airline before bringing any alcohol beverages on board. FAA regulations prohibit travelers from consuming alcohol on board an aircraft unless served by a flight attendant.”
That being said, we must admit we have seen people drinking from small airline-type bottles they have brought on board airplanes.
What is the Size for Carry on Luggage?
This is regulated primarily by the airlines. Typically, the size is considered to be measured by length, width and height measurements that may not exceed 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches high Including wheels and handles.
Many airlines follow these dimensions including Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta, Jet Blue and United. Southwest allows one more inch of height at 10 inches.
To be compliant with most airlines, we recommend staying with that 22X14X9 size. You may travel on multiple airlines and these dimensions will satisfy the vast majority.

The size allowed for personal items on airlines can vary slightly depending on the airline, but generally, a personal item is a small bag that can fit under the seat in front of you. Here are typical dimensions and guidelines for personal items:
