Where is the 0 Mile Marker in Key West?

Mile Marker 0 is located at 512 Whitehead Street in Key West. The sign denotes the end of Route 1. There are actually two Mile Marker 0 signs on opposite sides of Whitehead Street. Discover why below!

Mile Marker 0 — Where the Road Ends (and the Fun Begins!)

If you’ve ever driven down the Florida Keys, you’ve probably noticed those little green signs on the side of the road with numbers on them.

Those are called mile markers, and they’re used instead of street addresses all along the Keys. The numbers start at 126 near Miami and count down as you drive south.

When you finally reach Key West, you hit the most famous one of all — Mile Marker 0. That means you’ve literally reached the end of the road!

Mile Marker 0 sits at the corner of Fleming Street and US Highway 1, right in the heart of Old Town Key West.

There’s a small sign there, and tourists love to stop and take photos with it. It’s one of those spots where you just feel like you’ve accomplished something — like finishing a really long road trip with the best prize at the end.

Just across the street is another MM 0 sign, denoting the beginning of Route 1 heading North.

Just a block east is Duval Street, which is basically the main street of Key West.

Duval Street is famous for its restaurants, souvenir shops, bars, and all kinds of entertainment. It runs from the Gulf of Mexico on one end to the Atlantic Ocean on the other — making it one of the only streets in the country where you can walk from one body of water to another!

People call a walk up and down Duval Street the “Duval Crawl.”

Southermost point in the US
As the southernmost point in the US, it is also the warmest in the US coastal towns.

Just a short walk from Mile Marker 0 is the Southernmost Point buoy — another super popular photo spot. This giant black, red, and yellow marker tells you that you’re standing just 90 miles from Cuba.

It’s the southernmost point on the continental United States, meaning no part of the lower 48 states goes further south than right there.

The whole area around Mile Marker 0 is packed with things to do. You can visit the Ernest Hemingway Home, where the famous author lived and wrote some of his best books. The house is still full of his furniture and about 50 six-toed cats that roam freely!

Nearby, you can also check out Mallory Square, where locals and visitors gather every single evening to watch the sunset. Street performers, artists, and food vendors make it feel like a little outdoor festival every night.

The water around Key West is also crystal clear and warm, perfect for snorkeling, paddleboarding, or just splashing around.

Whether you’re taking a picture at the mile marker sign, exploring Duval Street, or watching the sun melt into the Gulf, Mile Marker 0 is the kind of place that sticks with you long after you’ve driven back home.
