However, Tampa Florida is near dozens of beaches. The issue is which one should you and your family head to and which ones you should skip.

The closest beach to Tampa, Florida, is Ben T. Davis Beach. It is located just 7 miles west of downtown Tampa along the Courtney Campbell Causeway (Route 60).
It’s a popular spot for locals and visitors, offering a sandy shoreline, picnic areas, volleyball courts, and beautiful sunset views over Tampa Bay. It’s ideal for a quick beach escape without leaving the city.
However, we cannot recommend this beach! See one of the warnings issued in March 2025.
We live nearby. Ben T. Davis Beach is frequently shut down because of bacteria levels. The beach is not known for its cleanliness and we certainly would not take a family to this beach.
Spend a few more minutes going to one of the beaches we recommend below. Specifically, Clearwater Beach is commonly considered the best beach near Tampa, but there are many more!

The beaches we present below are all within an hour of Tampa. Fortunately, Tampa’s proximity to a great highway system allows for quick and easy access to many beaches near Tampa. We will give you the location and travel directions to the best beaches near Tampa Florida.
It should be noted there are several modes of transportation available. You can drive a personal vehicle, rent a car, use a ride-share company like Lyft or Uber, or taxis are available throughout the city to get to your destination.
Best Beaches Closest to Tampa Florida
All of the beaches near Tampa we have chosen below have powdery white sand and safe clean beaches. We have visited all of them or we would not be recommending them to you.
Clearwater Beach
As we stated, we live near Clearwater Beach. We also know this is one of the highest-rated beaches in Florida. The beach is pure white sand-like powder. This island beach gets travelers, locals and beach enthusiasts from around the world.
From one end of the beach to the other there is access to restrooms, lifeguards, dining, activities, resorts and affordable hotels. Few beaches can offer so many activities near the main beach, from boat charters, jet-skis, and parasailing to the famous Captain Memo’s Pirate Ship – all available within walking distance.
Clearwater Beach is also home to the Clearwater Marine Aquarium made famous by the movie Dolphin Tale.
Clearwater Beach is about 40 minutes from Tampa on Route 60 directly west of Tampa.

St. Pete Beach

For a different experience on a fairly remote beach, Caledesi Island is the place to go. The fun part is taking a ferry from Honeymoon Island to Caladesi. This short 20-minute ride is worth it to get to the beach.
The island is part of Caladesi Island State Park which features nature trails through mangrove forests and sand dunes, providing opportunities for hiking, bird-watching, and kayaking. Caladesi Island Beach’s untouched landscape and serene setting make it a cherished destination for those seeking a quiet and scenic escape.
The park has food and beverages as well as restrooms and shelters for picnics. This is not the closest beach to Tampa Florida or the easiest to get to – but the experience will be remembered for a lifetime!
The directions to Caladesi are the same as Honeymoon Island. You just take the ferry from Honeymoon to Caladesi.

Anna Maria Island – Bradenton, Florida
Don’t mind driving a few extra miles for a unique experience? The beaches at Anna Maria Island, located on Florida’s Gulf Coast, are renowned for their soft white sand, clear turquoise waters, and relaxed, old-Florida charm.
Stretching for miles along the island, these beaches, including Coquina Beach, Manatee Beach, and Bean Point, offer a serene and picturesque setting perfect for swimming, sunbathing, and beachcombing. Anna Maria Island is about an hour and fifteen minutes from Tampa. It is a little longer but an easy drive via I-275 south to Route 64 west. This is not one of the closest beaches to Tampa Fl, but it is one of the unique options.
Beaches Near Tampa – Lesser Known and Less Crowded

Indian Rocks Beach – This is a nice beach just south of Clearwater Beach. While Indian Rocks Beach is a nice community, there is limited public access to the beach.
Sand Key Park Beach – This is a very nice beach just south over a small bridge from Clearwater Beach. It is in a county park that gets crowded on the weekends. While the beach is excellent, most people go to Clearwater Beach just one-half mile away which has all the attractions.
Treasure Island Beach – This is a relatively small nice beach near the tourist attraction called John’s Pass. While it is a typical Gulf Coast beach, it has limited public access. The same situation applies to nearby Madeira Beach.
