What do the mile markers in the Florida Keys mean?

The Florida Keys mile markers show your approximate location along U.S. 1, the Overseas Highway. In simple terms, the number tells you how far you are from Key West, with lower numbers closer to Key West and higher numbers farther northeast toward the mainland.

How do the mile markers work in the Florida Keys?

The markers are posted along the Overseas Highway and help drivers, businesses, and visitors identify locations quickly. A place listed at MM 66.2, for example, is just past mile marker 66 and before mile marker 67. Locals often give directions by mile marker instead of street address because it is easier and more useful on a long island chain with one main highway.

Do Florida Keys mile markers count up or down?

They count down as you drive southwest toward Key West. That is why travelers entering the Keys from the mainland start with high numbers and gradually work their way down to Mile Marker 0 in Key West.

Where do the Florida Keys mile markers start?

The broader Overseas Highway marker system begins near the mainland side of the Keys, with sources commonly placing the start around MM 126 or MM 127 south of Florida City. In practical travel terms, many visitors feel the “real” island chain begins around Key Largo, where markers are around MM 107 to MM 106.

Where do the Florida Keys mile markers end?

They end at Mile Marker 0 in Key West, which marks the end of U.S. 1 in the Florida Keys. That famous marker is one of the most photographed road signs in Key West.

Where is Mile Marker 0 in Key West?

Mile Marker 0 is in downtown Key West at or near the corner of Whitehead Street and Fleming Street, where U.S. 1 officially ends. Visitors often stop there for a photo because it marks the southern end of the Overseas Highway journey.

Why are mile markers so important in the Florida Keys?

They are important because the Keys are stretched out along one long highway, and many businesses, resorts, parks, restaurants, and attractions identify themselves by mile marker. It is one of the easiest ways to understand where something is located without relying only on a street address.

Are Florida Keys mile markers on both sides of the road?

Yes. The Florida Department of Transportation maintains the green-and-white markers along the Overseas Highway, and they are used as roadside reference points throughout the Keys.

What does oceanside mean in the Florida Keys?

“Oceanside” means the Atlantic Ocean side of the Overseas Highway. In travel directions and business listings, it helps visitors know which side of the road or island a destination is on.

What does bayside or gulfside mean in the Florida Keys?

“Bayside” or “gulfside” refers to the Florida Bay / Gulf side of the Keys. Those labels are commonly used with mile markers to make locations easier to find.

Are odd and even addresses tied to oceanside and bayside in the Florida Keys?

Yes. In many Keys address systems, odd-numbered addresses are on the oceanside and even-numbered addresses are on the bayside or gulfside. That can help visitors decode listings when they are searching for a hotel, restaurant, or attraction by mile marker.

What mile marker is Key Largo in the Florida Keys?

Key Largo begins around MM 107 to MM 106, depending on exactly where you consider the start of town, and it runs roughly down toward the low 90s. Many travelers think of Key Largo as the first major stop after entering the Keys from the mainland.

What mile marker is Islamorada in the Florida Keys?

Islamorada is generally associated with mile markers in the upper 80s through the low 80s. Popular landmarks in that stretch include Founders Park, Theater of the Sea, History of Diving Museum, and several well-known waterfront restaurants and resorts.

What mile marker is Marathon in the Florida Keys?

Marathon is commonly associated with mile markers in the high 50s down through the upper 40s. Notable Marathon-area stops include the Marathon airport, Crane Point, the Turtle Hospital, and the approach to the Seven Mile Bridge.

What mile marker is Bahia Honda in the Florida Keys?

Bahia Honda State Park is around MM 36.8, making it one of the best-known Lower Keys beach stops on the Overseas Highway. It is often included on Florida Keys road-trip itineraries because of its beaches, views, and historic bridge setting.

What mile marker is the Seven Mile Bridge?

The Seven Mile Bridge begins around MM 47 in Marathon and runs southwest toward about MM 40. It is one of the most iconic stretches of the Overseas Highway.

What mile marker is Big Pine Key?

Big Pine Key is generally reached around the low 30s on the mile-marker system, with nearby markers covering attractions such as the National Key Deer Refuge area and the turnoff toward No Name Key.

What mile marker is Key West?

Key West covers the final stretch of the drive near the lowest mile markers, ending at Mile Marker 0. As you get into the single digits, you are close to Stock Island, the Key West approaches, and eventually downtown Key West.

Can you use mile markers instead of addresses in the Florida Keys?

Yes. In fact, many visitors find mile markers more useful than street addresses because they instantly tell you where a place is along the Overseas Highway. Hotels, restaurants, marinas, parks, and local guides often use mile markers in directions and descriptions.

Why do businesses in the Florida Keys advertise their mile marker?

They do it because the mile-marker system is one of the fastest ways for drivers to find a location on U.S. 1. Since nearly every trip through the Keys follows the same main road, the marker number is often more helpful than a full postal address

Are the Florida Keys mile markers accurate for trip planning?

Yes, they are very useful for trip planning because they help travelers judge where attractions are relative to each other. They are especially helpful when building a road trip from Key Largo to Key West and deciding where to stop along the way

What are some of the most famous Florida Keys mile markers?

Some of the best-known mile markers include around MM 102.8 for John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, around MM 84.2 for Theater of the Sea, around MM 77 for Robbie’s, around MM 58.9 for Dolphin Research Center, around MM 48.5 for the Turtle Hospital, around MM 47 for the Seven Mile Bridge, around MM 36.8 for Bahia Honda State Park, and Mile Marker 0 in Key West. Your mile-marker list highlights many of these landmark stops.

Do the mile markers help with a Florida Keys road trip?

Absolutely. They make it easier to organize stops, estimate progress, and find attractions in order from northeast to southwest. For many visitors, learning the mile-marker system is the key to making a Keys drive feel simple instead of confusing.
