It takes 2.5 to 3 hours to drive from Key Largo to Key West. That is driving under normal conditions at the speed limits that vary along the Overseas Highway.

The drive to Key West is straightforward and very easy to follow. The biggest distraction will be the vast number of attractions, resorts, restaurants and state parks along the way.

What Can Affect the Driving Time Between Key Largo and Key West

There is only one road that goes from Key Largo to Key West. Like many roads, the traffic on the Overseas Highway is impacted by:
  • construction
  • accidents
  • festivals, parades and events
  • time of day (early morning is the best)
  • day of week (weekends are very busy)
Our experiences driving from Key Largo to Key West suggest that leaving before 7 AM is the best time to travel between the islands.
 

However, that means many of the attractions, restaurants, and stores are closed, so make plans accordingly.

Speed Limits Along the Overseas Highway

Speed limits on the Overseas Highway usually range from 35 to 55 mph, with many slower sections through towns, wildlife areas, and construction zones.

The Florida Department of Transportation currently shows some work areas reduced to 35 mph, and Florida Keys travel guidance notes that speed limits are strictly enforced and reduced in places like the Big Pine Key area.

How Far is the Drive from Key Largo to Key West

The distance from the north end of Key Largo to Key West is 106 miles. From the south end of the island to Key West is about 91 miles.

Overall, the Overseas Highway is about 113 miles long, which includes the distance from the mainland to Key Largo.

It should be noted that Key Largo is the largest of the Florida Keys.

Facts About the Drive from Key Largo to Key West

The first time we drove from Key Largo to Key West opened our eyes to one of the most beautiful 100 miles we had ever driven.
 
It is truly hard to keep your eyes on the road. Here are some things you need to know.
  1. You will be on 43 islands and cross 42 bridges.
  2. Attractions, quaint restaurants and shops will be on both sides of the road.
  3. Traffic can be heavy, but there are numerous places to pull over and view the island scenes.
  4. You will cross the Seven Mile Bridge, which some have considered one of the wonders of the world when it was built.
  5. In one area, there could be dog-sized deer meandering along the road. They are a unique protected species only found in the Florida Keys.
  6. You will see small green signs along the road that tell you the mile marker of your location. Many attractions use mile markers as their address. You can learn more about mile markers in the Florida Keys.

Collectively, all of the islands have their own personality, terrain and things to see.

If possible, take your time and experience it all. Or, better yet, plan a multiday trip through the islands.
